Resources for Students

For writing your thesis:

  • Install a LaTeX editor on your computer. More comfortable and faster than Overleaf. Example: kile.
  • Use Zotero (with browser extension) and BibTeX for literature management. Takes a moment to learn, saves a lot of time later.
  • Use \bibliographystyle{alphadin}. Cite keys of the form [BD22] immediately remind you what paper they are refering to without requiring the reader to look it up in the bibliography.
  • Use \newcommand* instead of \newcommand and instead of \def. Use \newenvironment* instead of \newenvironment. Less prone to weird errors later.
  • \usepackage{todonotes}
  • \usepackage{cleverref}. Use \cref instead of \ref and \eqref.
  • Use automatic spell checking to remove annoying typos.
  • You are not writing poetry. One mathematical object can always be denoted by the same word, no need for synonyms. Keep your sentences short. "Let us consider the function..." has no advantage over "Consider the function..." etc.
  • Let $m,n$ be natural numbers. Let $m$, $n$ be natural numbers.
  • Have mercy on the reader. Make an effort to cast your thesis in a logical order.
